One of the Larger Trends in Tech

These job cuts are not contained. Other major tech companies such as Meta (Facebook), Microsoft, Amazon & Apple have recently cut their workforces too. Tech giants are changing their focus to AI growth, cloud computing, and next-gen products.

Google’s Recent Layoff History

This is not the first time for Google to restructure. This is a timeline of recent layoffs:

  • January 2023: Alphabet (Google’s parent company) has shed 12,000 jobs, which constitutes 6% of its global workforce because of economic uncertainty.
  • April 2024: Google fired hundreds from its Platforms and Devices Group, including those developing Android, Pixel, and Chrome.
  • May 2025: 200 additional workers lost their jobs from the Global Business Unit.

At the end of 2024, about 183,000 people worked for Alphabet.

The Bigger Picture

The tech industry is experiencing a significant turn around. Companies are slashing bills and are heavily investing in AI, automation and cloud services. This involves team restructuring, altering the approach to investments, and, unfortunately, workforce size adventures in some areas.
